Can I Become a Certified Aromatherapist Online?
We set out to discover whether or not you can become a certified aromatherapist online. In the United States, yes, you can. The National Association of Holistic Aromatherapists says that, "Aromatherapy is currently an unregulated and unlicensed field both for the practice of aromatherapy as well as the manufacture of aromatherapy products. As a whole the industry seeks to comply with current safety and standards of practice and to stay informed about potential impending regulations with regards to manufacturing aromatherapy based products. NAHA is devoted to bringing you up to date information on any impending legislation.....With regards to licensing: aromatherapy is an unlicensed profession in the United States. Many aromatherapy practitioners hold a license in another occupation, e.g. nursing, massage therapy, esthetics, naturopathy, acupuncture, etc. Because licensing tends to be profession driven rather then government driven (although this too may happen, e.g. licensing of reflexologists in the state of WA), it is highly unlikely that we will see a license for aromatherapy anytime soon."
NAHA also offers a list of schools that they have approved who offer Aromatherapist Certification. Some have online programs. The link to the schools is https://naha.org/education/approved-schools
Based on our research, we have found that the schools offer different types of certifications. Most of the schools offer the Aromatherapist Certification. Some schools offer an Essential Oil Specialist Certification.
Once you have completed your Aromatherapy Certification Program, you can take the certification examination offered by the Aromatherapy Registration Council, or ARC. You can take the ARC certification examination one of two times that is offered annually. The examination offerings are in the fall and the spring and it is taken over a two week time frame. The Professional Testing Corporation offers the exam and they are an organization that offers online testing.
